Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

The original Deus Ex was a game that I never experienced back when it was released in the year 2000, but in all honesty I doubt it would have had much of an effect on me at the time, probably because I was only ten. However that doesn’t mean that I haven’t heard a tremendous amount about the game since it was released; it was clearly an acclaimed game in the eyes of both the critics and the public. So when I heard the announcement that a Deus Ex prequel was in the works I was eager to see how Eidos could reinvigorate the rpg franchise and support the increasingly rare market for intelligent shooters, especially after the sequel that was viewed by many to be a disappointment (Invisible War).

It is the year 2027 and the world is breaking new ground in the advancement of human potential by attempting to merge technology with biology in order to determine humanity’s evolutionary path; a very intriguing prospect that we could very well see in the future awaiting us in the real world. Questions of morality and ethical accountability are continuing themes throughout the game and the player is ultimately invited to take part in this quandary as the narrative escalates, which is great to see albeit a little shallow at times, however it is nice for a developer to want to raise questions about morality and ethical issues that can only add credibility to the medium as a whole if it is done in a thoughtful and mature manner; which I believe HR principally achieves.

Not having any clear knowledge of the events of the first Deus Ex or the world where they took place I began Human Revolution with a largely blank slate. In HR we are introduced to a new protagonist called Adam Jensen; a gruff, ex-SWAT, security officer working for the seemingly infamous Serif Industries who are one of the major corporations driving the aforementioned custom evolution via the research and development of bio-technology or ‘human augmentation’ as it is generally referred to in the game.

The game begins with Eidos giving us a tour of Serif’s labs and the various technologies that are being researched but before long there is a major incident that results in Adam being seriously injured. Conveniently the technology created by Serif is used to save Adam’s life by augmenting his body, which we see applied to him via a slick montage very much reminding me of the beginning of Mass Effect 2 where its protagonist goes through a similar procedure in order to survive. This life-saving treatment not only saves Adam but also gives him enhanced abilities that players can upgrade throughout the game depending on how they wish to play by acquiring experience points. Examples of this include the ability to see through walls, invisibility, advanced hacking skills and an interesting offensive augment called ‘Typhoon’ which enables Adam to fire explosive ball-bearings in a circle around himself to defeat nearby enemies.

So the scene is set and now you must take control of Adam in order to find the people responsible for the attack on Serif Industries. The gameplay can be defined as first-person stealth action, giving players a myriad of options that enable them to be as silent as a mouse or as deadly as a hawk. Whether you wish to go through the game murdering everyone in sight using your augmented arm-blades of death (not their official title) combined with several upgradable weapons you can wield, or progressing through each area without a guard ever knowing you were there, you can choose, and I’m happy to report that it all works superbly well. The stealth mechanics without a doubt are enough for you to give this game a chance; they’re the best I have ever experienced and it is very pleasing to see Eidos improve upon the stealth genre so much, as it’s a style of gameplay that has always been a niche, only having rare successes with titles such as Metal Gear Solid, which I honestly feel looks mediocre in comparison to the stealth gameplay in HR.

Most mission scenarios will have you moving through various locations in order to acquire information or to find a particular individual. In my first play-through I decided to try playing as non-lethally and silently as possible. I enjoy the trial and error that comes with this style of play and I found manipulating the environment and AI was very satisfying when you’re able to sneak through an entire area leaving the guards completely unaware of your presence. You’re asked at the beginning of your first mission whether you want to play lethally or non-lethally and depending on your answer you will be given a choice of two weapons but in no way does this force you to play this way for the entirety of the game. As I chose to play non-lethally I was given the option to start with either a short range stun gun or a long range tranquillizer rifle. I went with the rifle which was fine, however when I later found a stun gun I actually preferred it as it knocks out enemies faster than the tranquillizer darts, which have a slight delay before they knock out enemies.

The fps gameplay feels good and HR has a good mix of lethal and non-lethal weapons that all sound great when fired. This is primarily a stealth action game and stealth is definitely the focus because although you can choose to engage the enemy head on it is almost always going to get you killed. Adam’s augmentations give him enhanced abilities but the game is still fairly grounded in reality in that it really doesn’t take much for the enemy to kill you. If you are spotted and remain out of cover for more than a few seconds you’re going to die, so while it is possible to play aggressively, taking cover is an essential part of the game. The AI are quite accurate marksman which some players may feel is a cheap way to make the game more challenging but I would disagree; so many games have enemies that are supposed to be soldiers or guards, experienced in frontline combat, yet they can’t hit a thing and you can stroll around casually without a single bullet flying your way. To me that is far less realistic than actually facing enemies that you would logically expect to be competent marksman.

Furthermore my overall assessment of the AI is that it is very good. It is quick to hear your footsteps, spot you moving from cover to-cover and when noticing enemies you’ve previously apprehended they are quick to alert their comrades. Yes, there are a few ways you can exploit the AI but these aren’t a big issue, for example obviously if you take out a guard and another guard notices the body they are going to investigate, and this can give you the opportunity to now take out this guard in the same way and the process could be repeated multiple times. Although this is an exploit it doesn’t work every time as the AI is very good at locating your position if they hear your gunfire, so you can be spotted quite easily if you choose to fire while there are guards close by. I can’t see how a player repeatedly exploiting such things could really enjoy the game compared to experimenting with the wide array of intricate stealth mechanics that Eidos has included in the game but maybe that’s just me.

Apart from the solid gunplay HR also includes an intelligent conversation system much like rpgs such as Mass Effect or Fallout 3, however I would say that Eidos hasn’t made it as integral to the game as a game like Mass Effect which requires you make decisions in pretty much every interaction you partake in. Rather HR gives players fewer opportunities to make choices via speech but arguably when you are given the chance to influence and in some cases manipulate certain people it is a much deeper interaction. Eidos avoids the current trend of giving players any kind of moral alignment and instead lets the future narrative justify or condemn the choices that they have made. If conversational gameplay is something you enjoy then HR gives you the option to enhance this aspect of the game via upgrading the ‘Social Enhancement’ augmentation. This upgrade allows players to analyse the personality of the AI they are speaking with in order to more effectively communicate and/or influence them and gives you more advanced responses that are aimed at particular archetypes. Also, whilst interacting with certain characters a persuasion bar is displayed showing how well the interaction is going, in other words how likely they are to bend to your will which I thought was a great touch. Not only was it hugely satisfying to completely sway a characters opinion but the animation displayed during these interactions was also very impressive; there were occasions where you could see in a characters eyes, their mind changing, a realisation had occurred and what you had said to them had impacted their view. It was really enjoyable to see how some of the more serious interactions played out.

An area that Deus Ex really excels in is its sophisticated art direction. The stylish colour palette restricted to shades of gold and black really help to define the world and set it apart from other sci-fi offerings. HR has obviously taken inspiration from classic films such as Blade Runner but I think it has done a great job in creating a unique look that it can call its own. From a technical stand-point HR is an attractive game, it isn’t quite at the top of the class graphically but my experience on the pc was very pleasing on the eye. There were some minor frame rate issues and even though I began playing after Eidos had released the first patch fixing some of the games issues such as the overly long loading times, it still had some technical problems that led to me experiencing some frustrating lock-ups. I think the reason for this was due to an issue with DirectX 11; disabling it seemed to quell the problem but Eidos should hopefully have another patch on the way that can deal with this issue.

Other than the great visuals found in HR, Eidos has also done a fantastic job in the sound department with a stand-out musical score that runs throughout the game, intertwined with ambient delights flowing through the games various locations that make it a joy to simply explore the world around you. The voice work is also of a high standard with strong performances from the main cast of characters. The acerbic dialogue between Adam and his technical aid Pritchard is especially well done and supplies some comic relief in an otherwise stern narrative; with each character continually trying to degrade the other via their back-handed comments, almost forgetting that they are on the same team.

The missions in HR are divided into main missions and side missions and once acquired can be tackled in whatever order the player chooses. Great menus and map layouts aid players in the navigation of the open-world and also allow for upgrades to be applied at any time. The main missions are obviously integral to the story and if that’s all you care about you are free to focus on them, but the quality and variety in the side missions impressed me and I found myself completing most of them on my first play-through. Many if not all of the missions allow you to somewhat determine a preferred outcome that can impact future events and Eidos does a great job of giving you the freedom to make decisions that’s consequences are not always clear. Many games have gotten into the habit of creating a very black and white conversation system or moral path and I’m glad Eidos decided to keep a level of ambiguity in the moral efficacy of the decisions you make.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a sterling example of a stealth-action rpg done right and there are few games in recent memory that have achieved so many of its intended goals. Whether it’s the excitement garnered from clearing an area without ever being noticed using the excellent stealth mechanics or manipulating a character into complying with your agenda via the conversational gameplay, HR delivers. There are some minor technical issues that need to be addressed and I would have liked to have seen some more memorable, well-established characters but overall I think HR does a great job in telling a clever story that has some of the best rpg gameplay I’ve ever experienced. If you enjoy the rpg genre then HR will surely have something for you that few games can match.

Verdict: Play this game.

I've decided to take a break from working on my first character which is mostly complete in terms of the modeling stage in order to begin my second character.

I am in the early modeling stages and I can see that there may be potential problems with the proportions I have chosen for the character when it comes to rigging certain joints. We will see, there's a long way to go!

I wasn't happy with the last face I uploaded either so I started another face just tonight and I'm quite impressed with how far I have progressed with it. I'm hoping that this could actually be the one I stick with but who knows.

The method I used for this face was a little bit random; I used my tutor's model as a reference but the edge flow I have created is a little bit different. The fact that I was able to achieve a balanced model without any triangles by basically making it up as I went along I think shows the improvement in my understanding of how the edges of a face should flow in a natural way. This is obviously due to the ridiculous amount of time I've spent just modeling faces. I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end!

It wasn't my intention for him to be looking so evil but I found his current expression quite funny. Still lots to do for me to be satisfied with it but I'm learning new tricks all the time; hopefully they'll reduce the time it takes me to create my second character.

Progressing slowly but surely with this model, I want to spend the extra time on it now rather than finding out it isn't up to the standard I need it to be at when I begin to animate later. I decided to use planes to create this face after trying a couple of other methods that I didn't feel suited my way of working. This method supposedly takes a longer amount of time but also acheives more accurate results.

I have still got some refining to do especially around the cheeks and I also need to define the lips. I am leaving the ears until the end because I gather that they can be quite difficult.

Dead Space 2: Quick Review

After ten hours of screams, stomping, impaling and the dismemberment of countless infected limbs, I had finished my first play-through of Dead Space 2. This is a game I was looking forward to a lot, choosing to steer clear of most of the media surrounding the game in the build-up to its release. I loved the first Dead Space and was grateful that there was still a developer out there that could make a high quality survival horror game, which became more of a rarity after Capcom had decided to abandon any chance of that with Resident Evil 5.

Dead Space 2 begins 3 years after the events of the first game as Isaac awakes not knowing where he is, and suffering from dementia, has to fight off another horde of Necromorphs in order to survive and find out what has happened to him. I feel this may be the games weakest element and it is a shame because although it was nice to see a more developed Isaac who speaks throughout the game; the story was quite flimsy and wasn't as engaging as the first, especially because the narrative is rooted in the events of the original and therefore feels very familiar.

The gameplay and presentation are as solid as ever with several great gameplay tweaks such as the ability to freely float around rooms with zero gravity; also the melee attacks have been improved and just like the first game, the user interface is still one of the best ever.

Visceral Games have nailed the atmosphere and sound design yet again, doing its utmost to make you feel helpless and alone, especially in the earlier chapters. The voice-acting is also very good despite the slightly undeveloped characters.

Dead Space 2 is at the pinnacle of the survival horror genre and has truly established itself with this exhausting and heart-pounding sequel; which with a stronger story could have entered into truly elite status. However that isn't to say that you won't greatly enjoy this gorey adventure that has got the most important thing right: gameplay.

p.s This review was intended only to comment on the single player campaign as I have yet to try out the new multiplayer features.

A quick animation of a robot slipping on an a banana XD

Happy with it other than I just noticed the robot's feet are walking slightly above the floor. A little annoying but it didn't take me that long to create and I chose to render in 1280 by 720 so it's great quality; I think you have to go to Vimeo's website to watch into HD though. I should have another similar animation up soon too.

My First Ever Character Animation

I have finally finished my first character animation and it has been a very rewarding experience that has helped to improve my 3D design and illustrative skills. Looking back at what I have created I can see several things that I could improve upon and I plan to implement this new knowledge into my next project.

The main area I feel I need to improve upon is the overall animation in the piece because I felt that in parts it isn't as smooth and natural as I wanted it to be. I found it difficult to judge how realistic the animation was going to look when watching it in 3ds Max compared to when I imported the frames into Adobe Premiere. In Premiere the imperfections were clearer and for some of my early renders I rectified these mistakes in order to make the animation more natural. I still feel I can improve and with more experience animating I will have a better understanding of how to create realistic movement.

The narrative structure of my animation changed somewhat from my initial storyboard, most notably the removal of my rodent character that was supposed to steal the robot eye. I decided to take this character out of the scene so that I could focus my effort on creating a solid rig for my robot which I felt I did quite well. I feel the narrative was quite a strong aspect my scene that was clear and easy to follow; I've had some good feedback from fellow course-mates and friends in general regarding both the narrative and the overall presentation: and people thought it was actually funny! Humour being one of the main themes of the project with reference to Charlie Chaplin.

Another area of the project that took me a while to fully commit to was the environment. My initial storyboard denotes a landfill site as the location for my scene. However, when I began to model my environment I wasn't sure how I was going to able to animate so many falling objects like my storyboard suggests and I didn't want to merely imply that a pile of rubbish was collapsing onto my robot only to not show the implied action via a cutway.

With that in mind I augmented the environment into something more related to a car scrapyard; predominantly occupied with car bodies and tires. I felt this was a smart compromise as I felt more confident about animating large objects like cars falling however I would very much like to improve upon animating forces such as gravity in a more life-life way in the future: I enjoyed modelling the car too although I kept it relatively low in polygons to save render time.

Lighting is another element of visualisation I wish to improve upon because although I felt the lighting in my scene was appropriate I only used one light that acted as a Sun and would like to experiment with more advanced lighting techniques. I have been recommended the book 'Digital Lighting and Rendering' which I hope will help me with this.

This has been a great project that I have thoroughly enjoyed; it has expanded my skills with 3ds Max and opened my eyes to difficulties which surround the art of creating good animation. I look forward to my next project which we were recently briefed on where I hope make big leaps in all areas of my work; and I have to say I don't think I've ever been looking forward to a project as much as this one, which will begin at the start of term two after the holidays. A hint is in my blog title.

Gran Turismo 5 the worst in the series?

I don't even need to mention how long in the making this game has been but now Gran Turismo 5 is finally here, is it all we hoped it would be? I must admit I'm not the biggest fan of driving games but I've played a few in my time and felt GT5 could be the next big title to get me back into the genre. I am yet to have the chance to try the game but after scanning some of the reviews around the net it seems that GT5 has garnered mixed opinions. Many have applauded the core gameplay and believe it lives up its title of 'the real driving simulator' however there have been several negative comments about the game such as it having sloppy menus, inconsistent visuals and clunky online capabilities; perhaps most surprisingly CVG went as far as to say 'we reckon Forza III has the march on GT5 in overall aesthetics.' which is a huge surprise considering the hype surrounding how beautiful the game was going to be, largely due to the 'power of the PS3'.

You don't need to tell me that review scores shouldn't be the only thing to convince you to play a game but after 20 critic reviews GT5 has established a rather underwhelming average score of 86 on Metacritic. I thought I'd take a look at how this compared to past installments of the game and was surprised to find that the past four console GT games have all scored higher than Polyphony's latest effort and that GT5's main competitor Forza 3 has a score of 92 on Metacritic.

So does this mean GT5 is the worst in the series? We'll all have to play it to make up our own minds but I'm quite confident that it's a solid title worthy of the attention of any driving game fan.

Sorry if you were worried I'd recently switched to a fine art degree with all the naked drawings uploaded to my blog but I have been contiuning to work on my 3D designs. It has taken me a while but now I think I'm quite close to being fully happy with my final robot model. I will spend tomorrow rigging the whole thing which will likely lead to some design changes but for the most part I think it will be unchanged. I wanted to keep it quite simple and didn't want to have a super realistic look however the texture style may change but for now I have uploaded some images of where my robot is currently at. The images demonstrate how my rotate will have a rotating centre-piece that will enable its head to move around its body and also that my robot will have a missing eye which will be what it is searching for during the animated scene.

P.S I still need to add my robot's eyebrows which will be what conveys the majority of its emotion as the robot will not have a mouth.

Mary and Max

Mary and Max is a film about two very different people who communicate only through their letters to each other. Mary is an 8 year old girl living in Australia, whilst Max is a 44 year old man living in New York. Both have trouble fitting in and feel lost in the world. Their friendship is followed throughout the film and is an emotional journey to say the least.

I began watching this film with almost no prior knowledge of its narrative, only that it was a clay animation which followed the lives of two characters that wrote each other letters. This made the film even more surprising to me as I was totally caught off guide and found the film to be absolutely magnificent.

The audience is taken on roughly a 20 year journey of Mary and Max's relationship with each other that includes several serious themes such as; alcoholism, depression, religion, and obesity. Kids may find this film visually appealing due to its attractive art style however I really feel that it is aimed at a prodominately adult audience because of the overriding themes I have just mentioned.

This film is jut a sublime experience in every area; the animated art style is beautiful using colour scarcely in a way that to me made the look of the film even more memorable. The sound is also a delight using Penguin Cafe Orchestra's 'Perpetuum Mobile' as it's theme music which just added to the emotional power of the film. The quality of the characters was equally impressive, the voice work was brilliant and I don't think I've seen better; excluding Pixar's best work.

What I enjoyed most was the film's simplicity. The directors ability to make a simple interaction between two people so immersive and engaging was extremely pleasing and something that I wish was easier to find in contemporary cinema. Individuality and friendship are the qualities celebrated by the film, the real message I took was to not be ashamed of who you are and always try to put things in perspective; as well as trying to enjoy the little things in life.

I just finished my second life drawing class and therefore have some more work to share. Again for these drawings we were given 20 minutes so they aren't fully complete however, I think they show a good understanding of proportions and also a high level of detail in certain areas.

Yes, the last day of the the festival has passed and although I have enjoyed the festival immensely I am glad to be relieved of my duties so I can assign my attention to other things (and not have to wake up at 7:00am anymore!).

The friday night was great as I got to visit a small bar I'd never heard of called Nihon which was really cool. I met some great people and even got a t-shirt as there were two designers printing t-shirt designs on the upper floor of the bar. After this me and some other GameCity staff headed back to the Tent to join in with the Crysis 2 tournament that had been arranged. The top prize for winning was a trip to Frankfurt to visit Crytek studios. Unfortuantely I didn't win but I did win a t-shirt for being the top player on my team in the first round. I also got to talk to the crytek employees that were managing the event and acquired one of their e-mail addresses.

Saturday was the final day of the festival and we were celebrating Mario's 25th anniversary by having a huge party with lots of great games, prizes and of course...cake! Mario and luigi were even there to party with everybody, have a dance, and pose for photographs. There was also a costume party with the winner being awarded a special edition Wii console. We ended the day with a steward meeting where everybody who had helped out through the week was duly thanked for all their hard work. All the stewards had a photograph together and then wrote their contact details down in order to be contacted for future projects.

The festival was a great experience and I will definately consider applying to work next year. I have met a lot of great people, played some fun games and acquired some valuable experience.

I was finally able to attend the free life drawing class tonight and it was a really great experience and something I'd never done before. We started by doing three quick, five minute sketches of the model and then did another three more detailed drawings where we were given twenty-five mintutes for each. I've uploaded the three more detailed sketches and I hope to add more in the coming weeks.
